Linda Sullivan Ceramics - Uniquely Glazed Stoneware and Porcelain

Linda developed a special interest in glaze chemistry and glaze development while receiving her Master of Fine Arts degree in Studio Ceramics at Northern Illinois University. That interest led to Linda’s distinctive, self-developed glazes that she typically applies by pouring and overlapping with one another in a purposeful, painterly way. She applies those glazes on precisely formed, wheel-thrown or hand-built pieces with refined surfaces using stoneware or porcelain clays and fires them to 2300 F in electric kilns.

Over the years, that technique of using multi-layered glazes evolved and led to the depiction of landscape imagery. Linda continues to experiment with glazes and has become increasingly interested in developing crystalline glazes using complex, computerized firing schedules. 
 
Linda states, “The process for creating crystalline work is challenging and requires exacting conditions to ensure that crystals form – appropriate clay body, fluid glazes with specific chemical ingredients, correct thickness of glaze, and complex firing and cooling kiln cycles. Just as in nature when all conditions are perfect, crystals develop and grow, resulting in unique glazed pieces that differ from one another and that cannot be duplicated.”
